To perform the activity from the chemical reactions and equations, we should follow the following method.
Material used in the activity
- China dish
- Copper powder
- Burner
Procedure
We will take 1 g copper powder in a china dish and put it on the burner and heat it for some time and observe the change.
Observation
Copper powder is brown but when it is heated, a black coloured coating is formed on the surface of copper.
Explanation
When copper is heated, it reacts with oxygen to form copper oxide which is black. This is an oxidation reaction.
Chemical reaction of heating copper
2 Cu + O2 →2CuO
Conclusion
This activity demonstrate that copper undergoes oxidation reaction when it is heated and form a black layer of copper oxide on its surface.
This activity also illustrates the tendency of metals to form oxides when exposed to oxygen under heat.
FAQs
1.Why does copper change colour on heating?
Ans – The brown colour of copper changes to black due to formation of a layer of copper oxide on its surface.
2.Can this black layer be removed?
Ans- Yes, this black layer be removed when a reducing agent like hydrogen reacts with copper oxide.
3.What would happen if we heat copper in the absence of air?
Ans.- In the absence of air (oxygen) , copper would not oxidize and so there would no colour change.
