This group activity prepare your own indicator belongs to Acids, Bases and Salts of class 10 science.
Aim of the Group Activity
To prepare an indicator
Material used in the Group Activity
- Beetroot
- Knife/mortar
- Test tubes
- Filter paper
- Water
- lemon juice solution,
- soda-water
- vinegar
- baking soda solution
Procedure
We will take beetroot and crush it in a mortar. Now put it in a test tube or a container and add some amount of water. we will mix it and filter the extract and collect the filtrate in another test tube.
Now we will take four test tubes labelled A, B, C and D. now pour 2 mL each of lemon juice, soda water, vinegar and baking soda solution in the test tubes respectively.
We put 2-3 drops of the beetroot extract in each test tube and note the colour change.
Observation
S.N. | Solutions | Colour change |
Test tube A | Lemon juice | Light red |
Test tube B | Soda water | Dark red |
Test tube C | Vinegar | Dark red |
Test tube D | Baking soda | blue |
Explanation
Lemon juice is acidic in nature and beetroot extract is also slightly acidic. So there is minimal colour change can be seen.
Soda water is also acidic so with beetroot extract, the colour of solution remains dark red.
Vinegar is acidic and beetroot extract is also acidic, so when they are mixed, the colour of solution remains dark red.
Baking soda is alkaline in nature, when beetroot extract is added to it, colour changes to blue
Conclusion
The activity shows the colour changes of substance with natural indicators.
