Activity
Aim of the activity
To observe the effect of sunlight on silver chloride and find the chemical changes that occurs
Material used in the activity
- China dish
- Silver chloride powder
Procedure
We will take about 2 g silver chloride in a China dish and place this China dish in sunlight for some time. After some we will observe the changes.
Observation
The colour of silver chloride is white before exposing to sunlight.
After some time we can see its colour changes from white to grey.
Explanation
When silver chloride is exposed to sunlight, it undergoes photochemical decomposition reaction in which it break down into silver and chlorine
2AgCl →2Ag + Cl2↑
Elemental silver is grey in colour and chlorine gas is liberated in the atmosphere.
Conclusion
This activity demonstrates the decomposition of silver chloride in the presence of sunlight.
This chemical reaction is used in black and white photography.
