Activity 1.10 Class 10 Science

Activity

Aim of the activity

To observe the reaction between sodium sulphate and barium chloride solutions and formation of precipitate

activity 1.10 class 10 science

Material used in the activity

  1. Sodium sulphate solution
  2. Barium chloride solution
  3. Test tubes

Procedure

We will take about 3 ml  3 ml of sodium sulphate solution in a test tube and 3 ml of barium chloride solution in another test tube.

Now, we mix both solutions and observe the changes occurring in the test tube.

 Observation

When the solution of sodium sulphate and barium chloride are mixed in the test tube, a white insoluble substance is formed. This substance is known as precipitate.

Explanation

The chemical reaction between sodium sulphate and barium chloride is a double displacement reaction.

In this reaction, barium sulphate and sodium chloride are formed.

Barium sulphate is insoluble in water and it is white precipitate, so this reaction is also called ‘Precipitate reaction’

  Na2SO4(aq) + BaCI2(aq) →     BaSO4(s) + 2NaCI(aq)

Conclusion

The reaction between sodium sulphate and barium chloride produces white precipitate of barium sulphate.

Exchange of ions between two compounds takes place to form new products. This is displacement reaction.

 Frequently Asked Questions

1.Why does a precipitate form during this activity?

Ans. – When sodium sulphate and barium chloride solutions are mixed, an exchange of ions takes place and an insoluble  substance of barium sulphate is formed.

2.What is the colour of the precipitate formed in the reaction?

Ans. – White precipitate

3.What type of reaction takes place in the activity?

Ans – The double displacement reaction and it is also a precipitation reaction due to formation of precipitate.

4.How can this reaction be used to test for sulphate ions?

Ans. – When barium chloride is added to a solution containing sulphate ions, a white precipitate is formed that indicates the presence of sulphate ions.

5.What is the chemical formula of barium sulphate?

Ans. – BaSO4
