In this post, we will discuss activity 1.6 from Chemical reactions and equations of class 10 science.
Aim of the activity
To observe the effect of heat on lead nitrate powder and identify the changes due to its thermal decomposition
Material used in the activity
- Boiling tube
- Lead nitrate powder
- Tongues
- Spirit lamp or burner
Procedure
We will take about 2 g lead nitrate powder in a dry boiling tube and heat over the flame of a burner or spirit lamp.
Observation
We can observe that lead nitrate is white powder but after heating it turns yellow and a brownish gas is released
On heating lead nitrate, reddish brown fumes with pungent smell are evolved and a yellow residue remains in the test tube.
Explanation
Lead nitrate is a white salt that undergoes thermal decomposition when heated. Lead nitrate decomposes into lead oxide which is yellow and release brown gas nitrogen dioxide along with oxygen.
2Pb(NO3)2 (s) → 2PbO(s) + 4NO2(g) + O2(g)
Lead nitrate Lead oxide
Conclusion
This activity shows the thermal decomposition of lead nitrate that produces lead oxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen.
Precaution: Do not point the mouth of boiling tube at neighbours or yourself.
