Aim of the activity
To understand the burning of Magnesium and formation of magnesium oxide.
Materials used in the activity
- Magnesium ribbon (2 cm in length)
- Sand paper
- Burner
- Watch glass
- Tongs
Procedure
Preparation
At first, we will take a 2 cm long magnesium ribbon and clean it with sand paper to remove any oxide layer over it.
Burning process
Now we hold it with a pair of tongs and burn using a burner for a while.
Observation
When magnesium ribbon is burnt in flame, it burns with white dazzling and a white powder or ash is obtained in watch glass.
Explanation
When magnesium ribbon is burnt, it undergoes a chemical reaction. Actually Magnesium (Mg) reacts with air (O2) and form magnesium oxide which is white in colour.
Mg + O2 →2MgO
Magnesium undergoes a combination reaction in which Mg combines with oxygen to form MgO.
So, through this reaction we can understand that during a chemical reaction, a new substance is formed.
It is also an oxidation reaction, as Oxygen is added to magnesium.
Conclusion
It is clear that Mg burns and changes into a new substance of new state, which is magnesium oxide (MgO).
MgO is formed by the reaction of magnesium with oxygen present in air.
Safety measures
- It would be better if student’s wear eye protection.
- Do not hold magnesium ribbon with hands, use tongs.
- Perform activity in the assistance of teacher.
Significance of activity
This activity demonstrates a chemical reaction. The students can observe and analyze the changes in matter during the reaction.
What can a student explore more through this activity
- Student can measure the amount of magnesium oxide formed during this activity.
- Student can compare the chemical and physical properties of magnesium and magnesium oxide.
Questions based on the activity
- Why is magnesium ribbon cleaned before burring?
Ans – Magnesium ribbon is cleaned before burning because it has a oxide layer on it. That’s why it is cleaned with sand paper.
- What is chemical name and formula of product formed during the activity 1.1?
Ans- Chemical name – Magnesium oxide
Chemical formula – MgO
- Name the chemical reactions takes place when magnesium ribbon is burnt?
Ans – It is combination reaction. Magnesium combines with oxygen to form magnesium oxide.
- Write the equation for the chemical reaction takes place.
Ans – Mg + O2 →2MgO
- What is the colour of ash collected in watch glass during the activity?
Ans – White
